Young driver rallying for state championship race

MOTORSPORT: It is no surprise Mackay's Wayne Morton, at the age of 16, was the youngest driver to compete in an international rally.

He has been involved in motorsport since he was 14 years old.

"Before that, I spent countless hours in the shed helping my father with his motorsport endeavours,” Morton said.

"In 2010 I started club level Khanacross at the Tonka Park Raceway in Proserpine and after my first event I became that hooked.”

Morton went on to compete in the Queensland Khanacross Championships and won the junior category.

In 2012 he switched lanes and began rallying.

"It was a big leap as I had only acquired my learner's licence two days before competing in the rally, but it all went well and I secured first junior driver and also won the novice award,” he said.

He won the junior championship for the next two years and returned in 2015 with a much quicker car to finish first junior once again, second in the 1600cc and 13th outright in the championship out of 23 entrants.

Now, Morton, 20, has been awarded the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) Future Star award to add to his accolades. And there could be more to come. This year he will compete in the Queensland Rally Championships in his new Toyota S2000 Corolla (a factory build 4WD Corolla).
