Young apprentice has big day out at Ferguson Park
HORSE RACING: The penultimate race day on the Ferguson Park calendar took place on Saturday with local trainers experiencing success.
It was a shortened race day compared to previous meets with only four races run, but that didn't stop trainer Lee Kiernan from claiming race three with seven-year-old gelding Varnamo.
Backing up from a second-place finish in Gladstone over 1000m on Melbourne Cup Day, apprentice jockey Elyce Smith went one better on Varnamo at the weekend, winning by half a length to five-year-old Rockhampton mare Isis De Vega.
Smith rode two winners on the day, also coming first in race four on top of You Can't Be.
Gladstone Turf Club president David Weinert was impressed with the Rockhampton rider.
"She's a good young kid, shows a lot of promise and is improving all the time,” he said.
The strong performance by Varnamo also caught the eye of Weinert.
"It was a good, tough win and he sat next to the leader heading into the straight and the got the better of it over the last 50 metres,” he said.
"It was a good meeting and we're pretty happy with the crowd, is wasn't an overly big crowd but the weather was lovely and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.”
Gladstone trainer Denis Schultz had a quiet day, with That Pretty Girl failing to fire in race two and finishing at the back of the pack in a six-horse race.
The final Ferguson Park race meet of the year will take place on Saturday, December 16.
The Family Fun Race Day will be targeted towards kids with a jumping castle, slides, petting zoo and attractions.
