Watercooler: App guides parents on child sexual behaviour

THERE is an app for everything - including one for determining whether your child's sexual behaviour is normal.

True Relationships & Reproductive Health (True) has released its "Traffic Lights App" as a  tool to help parents and carers understand their child's sexual development.

A new app from True is designed to help parents with identifying what sexual behaviours in children are normal or less normal. It also gives advice on how to talk to children about their actions.

The app is based on the Traffic Lights Framework, used by Family Planning Queensland, schools and child care centres as a guide for monitoring and managing sexual behaviours.

It describes healthy sexual behaviours (green), concerning behaviours (orange), and harmful behaviours (red) for children aged 0-17.

It also explains possible reasons for specific behaviours, suggested responses and provides case studies.

Examples of green (healthy) behaviours for 10 to 13 year olds include a "growing need for privacy", "masturbation in private" and "use of sexual language".

So what do you think: Do parents need an app to tell them what's OK with their children?

Can parents be trusted to follow their instincts on these things?

Where do you stand?

True General Manager of Education and Community Services, Georgina Livingstone, said the app offered professional advice on an issue many were unsure about.

'Parents and carers can often worry, but most child sexual behaviours are normal and age-appropriate,' Ms Livingstone said.

'The Traffic Lights® App helps parents and professionals find common language and an understanding of whether behaviour is normal.

It costs $2.49 and is available in iPad and Android tablet formats.
