Workers on ground at bypass location

SURVEYORS and project managers have started on-ground site investigations to determine drilling locations for geotechnical work for the two tunnels associated with the Coffs Harbour bypass.

The RCA Australia staff undertaking the first on-ground work on the $1billion project will be involved in geotechnical exploration work involving a drill rig in the Gately Rd and Shephards Ln areas.

All site investigations being carried out by RCA Australia will inform the environmental assessment being prepared on the preferred route.

As work began on Wednesday, Cowper MP Luke Hartsuyker was briefed on the activities by staff at the Shephards Ln site.

He said preparatory work now meant the beginning of construction could begin almost the moment work on the Woolgoolga to Ballina section of the Pacific Hwy upgrade was completed.

"The $7 billion Pacific Hwy upgrade is powering along at great speed," Mr Hartsuyker said.

"So it's very important we fast-track preliminary work such as this on the bypass so we are ready to dove-tail the start of the bypass construction with the completion of the Pacific Hwy upgrade."

Arup has been named as the successful tenderer of the development of the 14km Coffs Harbour bypass Environmental Impact Statement and a refined concept design.
