Work crews move into Church Street

THE road has been closed and the pile driver has begun work at the northern end of Church Street in Bellingen.

It is the first step in what has been a bumpy path towards beautifying the town’s popular cafe precinct.

At this stage work is focused on building a viewing platform overlooking the Bellinger River.

Both the northern end of the street and Short St Lane have been closed and will remain so for about 12 weeks.

Pub Lane, which runs alongside the Swiss Patisserie and Bakery, will revert to two-way traffic during the construction period.

For additional information regarding the closures, please contact Bellingen Shire Council officer Julie Spokes on 6655 7347.

On Monday morning supporters of the Church Street camphor laurels staged a colourful gathering alongside the trees.

At last week’s Bellingen Council meeting councillors voted in favour of the removal of the tree on the eastern side of the street, adjacent to the Bellingen Court House.
