Woopi swimmers shine at Coast championships

WOOLGOOLGA swim champions Ella Bhatti, Emerson Bhatti and Madeleine McTernan excelled at the Swimming North Coast Short Course Championships last weekend.

The trio brought home a combined 19 medals from the event held at Lismore's Trinity Lismore Aquatic Centre.

"Pocket rocket" Ella won four silver medals and one bronze medal while her super fish brother Emerson won eight gold medals, one silver medal and set a new Swimming North Coast record in the 100m backstroke.

Madeleine was not to be outdone though, bagging herself five gold medals and setting nine Swimming North Coast multi class records.

The talented swimmer also broke two New South Wales State Short Course records.

Coach Eugene Brogmus said the outcome was a huge achievement for both families and the Woolgoolga sporting community.

"It was a very humbling experience to see all your swimmers perform and succeed at this level," he said.

"Ella, Emerson and Maddie have been training hard for this particular meet and the results now speak for themselves.

"If you want to be a champion in swimming, you really have to put in the hard yards all of the time, that's why we will now concentrate on their winter training sessions to keep them in tip top shape for the start of the summer competition."
