Women muscle in on mine jobs

WOMEN will score lucrative jobs in the mining industry thanks to two new projects under the Bligh Government's Women in Hard Hats program.

Minister for Women Karen Struthers said the high-paying jobs were a result of strong partnerships between the Queensland Government and key industry groups like BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and WDS Industry.

"The Women in Hard Hat projects are the first of their kind in Australia and demonstrate the Queensland Government's strong commitment to improving women's economic prosperity," Ms Struthers said.

"At least 20 women will be given coal mining training and jobs working in BMA mines in the Bowen Basin, earning over $80,000 per year," The first project will begin this month with an information session in Emerald on September 21 from 10am to 2pm at the Mayfair Hotel."
