SOS in sand helps helicopter find injured woman

UPDATE: RACQ CQ Rescue has rescued a 62-year-old woman on St Bees Island who was injured after a fall.

She suffered a suspected spinal injury in the recreational accident and was airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition for further medical treatment and observation.

Choosing a landing site on the island was made much easier for the RACQ CQ Rescue crew by a large 'SOS' that was etched into the sand, close to where the patient had fallen.

It is the second time this year that an SOS message in the sand has assisted the RACQ CQ Rescue crew to locate the position of people in trouble.

The first occasion was the now world-famous 'SOS in the sand rescue' of five people from Wigton Island who were stranded for nine hours on Easter Monday, after their boat broke anchor while they were snorkelling.
