Elderly woman tortured for days

A 70-YEAR-OLD woman fighting cancer was allegedly held hostage and tortured for three days by her de facto.

Police allege a 46-year-old man locked the woman in a room at her home at Coolabine, near Kenilworth, and threatened her with physical violence.

Emergency services were called when the woman escaped through a window on Friday.

She was allegedly found with numerous injuries and was taken for urgent medical care.

Sunshine Coast Detective Senior Sergeant Daren Edwards said the offender was known to police for previous alleged domestic violence offences.

"The woman was locked in and unable to leave for three days because of the isolation of the property," Det Snr Sgt Edwards said.

"She had an opportunity when the male was otherwise engaged and she was able to jump from a window.

"Fortunately she had been able to hide a phone and was able to make a call to a medical centre, which was able to ring 000."

Nambour police and detectives surrounded the home and apprehended the offender shortly after 3pm.

The man faces numerous domestic violence charges.

The victim was hospitalised overnight.

Det Snr Sgt Edwards said the woman, who had cancer, was lucky to escape.

"It is not uncommon for domestic-related incidents to turn violent and history shows that some matters can result in murder," he said.

"We do respond to them and take any reports of domestic violence seriously."

There were no allegations that the woman was raped.

The man will face Maroochydore Magistrates Court today.
