Witness to serious assault is sought

COFFS Harbour detectives are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault that left a man with multiple fractures to his face on New Year's Day.

A 21-year-old man was walking on Jordan Esplanade at the Jetty about 1.45am on January 1 when he was approached by another man who asked for money.

He was then repeatedly punched to the face by the attacker and fell to the ground, with the attacker stealing personal property before fleeing.

The man suffered substantial blood loss and was treated at the scene by ambulance officers before being transported to Coffs Harbour hospital.

The attack left the man suffering multiple fractures to the face and damage to the right eye that will require specialist treatment in the coming weeks.

Detectives from the Coffs/Clarence Local Area Command have been carrying out a number of inquiries into the incident and are seeking witnesses to the assault.

Police say a large number of people gathered at the Jetty to celebrate the New Year and are potentially witnesses to the attack.

Detectives are particularly interested in speaking to a man described as of Aboriginal appearance, 183 centimetres tall, of solid built with short dark curly hair and wearing a short-sleeved shirt.

Anyone who witnessed the attack is urged to contact Coffs Harbour Police on 6652 0299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
