Winx in class of own in George Main Stakes

RACING: Chris Waller has won three of the past four editions of the George Main Stakes and looks to have a mortgage on another victory with glamour mare Winx.

Winx has not raced since she returned with a comfortable win in the Warwick Stakes almost a month ago, after she was scratched from the Chelmsford Stakes due to the wet track.

That has not stopped punters taking the short price on offer for the star mare.

Not since the Black Caviar days has a horse started a Group One event at such a short price and her recent form suggests she will be extremely tough to beat.

The George Main Stakes has been a strong race for favourites in recent years and five horses have won the race as odds-on favourites since 1983 (Emancipation, Lonhro, Grand Armee, Racing To Win and More Joyous), but several of the biggest names in Australian racing history have had their colours lowered in the race.

Big Dreams was beaten as an odds-on favourite in 1991 and Danewin was rolled by Turridu in 1995.

Filante was beaten as a short-priced favourite in 1996 and 1997, while equine legends Might And Power (1998) and Sunline (1999) were beaten in consecutive years.

If Winx is beaten tomorrow, it would make these upsets pale in comparison.

Japanese import Tosen Stardom does add some x-factor to the race and he is one the second line of betting with Ladbrokes, but the star mare still has lengths on her rival.

It is extremely tough to see her getting beaten if she brings anything like her best form to the race.

The George Main Stakes is one of many exciting races set to take place right around Australia this weekend and you can find a wide range of betting markets with Ladbrokes.
