Winterbottom set to turn up heat in Darwin

MOTORSPORT: Defending Supercars title-winner Mark Winterbottom is confident of stretching his lead at the top of the championship table with a strong showing at one of his “favourite tracks” in Darwin this weekend.

The Prodrive Racing Australia star holds a slender 27-point lead over Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin in the overall standings.

“It’s one of my favourite tracks and the resurface definitely contributes to that,” Winterbottom said ahead of today’s practice.

“The resurface last year gave the track a lot more grip and if you add the soft tyre to the mix and a top speed of 270km on the straight, it’s going to be really mentally tough.”

Cabin temperatures over 50C and a main straight of 1.1km will be the main challenges for the drivers in the 42-lap race tomorrow and the 70-lap race on Sunday.

“There are going to be so many different variables at play. The surface, the heat, the high-grip track and strategy will play a really big part,” Winterbottom said.
