NEWCASTLE Football claimed the title of champion team in both the 11 and 12-years divisions at the Telstra State Championships for Boys in Coffs Harbour.

The 11-years side cemented its place on top of the table following a 7-0 victory over Northern Inland in the second last match of the tournament.

It was a different story for the 12-years squad as a 0-0 draw with host zone North Coast left the Novocastrians relying on other fixtures to finish on top.

Both North Coast teams finished fifth of the eight participating teams, although the younger boys were unlucky not to finish one position higher.

They almost caused an upset in their first match against Emerging Jets.

After holding the visitors 0-0 until the dying seconds, one mistake allowed the Jets to find the back of the net.

Running in conjunction with the major tournament was the Referees Targeted Athlete Program (TAP) with selected whistleblowers from each zone apopointed as match officials and their performance evaluated.

"The camp allows upcoming referees to develop their officiating skills under the guidance of experienced referees," NNSWF operations manager Alan Nisbet said.

"It provides these youngsters with a platform to showcase their abilities with the opportunity to represent Northern NSW on a national level."

North Coast Football referees participating were Brenton Knight, and Asama and Ben Radford.
