Wilson gears up for J-Bay, auctions off board for good cause

SURFING: Sunshine Coast product Julian Wilson will look to maintain his solid form on the world tour when he takes on the swells of South Africa's Jeffreys Bay this week.

The Corona Open J-Bay is the sixth stop on the Championship Tour and, conditions pending, is set to get under way on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old enters the event ninth in the overall standings and has been busy at the surf break in the lead-up, throwing in plenty of turns and manoeuvres in preparation.

"Excited to be back! And we have waves on the way,” Wilson posted on social media.

"What a day, feeling dam lucky/exhausted.”

He's yet to win at the event but it's certainly garnered plenty of solid results over the years.

He was runner-up in 2015, during which he famously swam to help Mick Fanning during a shark attack, before finishing third in both 2016 and 2017.

Wilson was close to the mark last year too, placing fifth.

While he endured a slow start to this year, Wilson has been in fine form of late.

"I feel like I'm building,” he said following his fifth-place finish at the Oi Rio Pro.

"I've got a few good results under my belt now and I really feel like I've made a turn for the better this year and I feel like I can still improve quite a bit.”

Although he's in Jeffreys Bay, his thoughts haven't been far from home with the surfer auctioning off one of his boards from the Quiksilver Pro on eBay in aid of 12-year-old Tewantin girl Josie Mecklem who is fighting bone cancer.

"It's been drawn on by Mum and signed by me, also throwing in a pair of my limited edition Hurley sig boardies,” he said yesterday.
