Wild Oats XI retakes the lead from US competitor Comanche

AUSTRALIAN yacht Wild Oats XI has taken the lead from US contender Comanche in calm conditions after a rough night for the Sydney to Hobart fleet.

The fleet has been depleted, with eight yachts forced to retire after taking a battering from stiff southerly winds and rough seas overnight.

Officials said conditions eased earlier today with the leaders off record pace, but the battle for line honours was intensifying.

Comanche and Wild Oats XI have been in a tight battle for the lead of the race with the Australian yacht edging in front this morning.

American yacht Comanche had held off seven-time line honours winner since starting in Sydney yesterday.
