Wide Bay aims to impress in region trials

UNION: Wide Bay players say there is plenty of motivation for them to do well despite no trophy being on the line in the Central Queensland Region championships.

After ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie cancelled the titles in Biloela last month, limited games are being held between the sides over the next month to make sure a representative Central Region side is picked for the Queensland Country Championships in Bundaberg in June.

This weekend Wide Bay will play Central Highlands at Hervey Bay before facing Rockhampton on May 6.

"It will be a true selection trial for all the sides,” Wide Bay coach Luke McCloskey told the NewsMail.

"It was disappointing not to play last month, but we understand why it was done.”

The side is also confident of a good showing despite no matches recently.

"We've had solid training sessions and there should be no problems with match fitness,” McCloskey said.

"We're also hopeful of having Iski Pongi and Vahiti Hopoi fit for the match.”

McCloskey also said it was important the players did well.

"This is their opportunity to play well and get picked to compete in front of their family s in the upcoming championships at home,” he said.
