Why we don't attract drivers

IT'S NOT that truckies are totally against work diaries, but it's the fines and points attached to the use of work diaries that riles them up, says one truckie.

Ben Gunn went so far as to say that the work diary was "one of the reasons this industry can't attract new blood”.

"Why would someone want to work all week just to have their pay cheque taken away for something that is nowhere near or nothing to do with safety?” he said.

"Just look at the system that Western Australia and the Northern Territory run under. Why do these states have twice the distance between destinations and run some of the biggest combinations in the country with half of the incidents that we on the east coast have?

"It's not rocket science, it's common sense. Something the law makers on the east coast seem to have none of.”
