Why Grey’s Anatomy star decided to come out

IT WASN'T until Orlando's Pulse nightclub shooting and continued violence against the LGBTQ community that Sara Ramirez felt compelled to share her bisexual and queer identities.

"An organic, incremental urgency to use my platform to empower those who are part of these communities that I'm a part of came over me in a way that I've never felt before," the former Grey's Anatomy star said on EW and People's Coming Out Stories.

Ramirez, 42, who currently appears on Madam Secretary, called coming out a "sense of relief."

"It's been a form of liberation for me to own all of my identities," she shared, "so that I no longer feel the need to hold back or hide any parts of myself when I walk through any threshold in life."

During a movie night at home, she decided to share her "truth" with people who were close to her. Ramirez never expected their reactions.

"Everyone was very supportive and happy for me," she said, adding, "The reaction went something like, 'Huh? Cool. Can we get back to the movie now?'"

Ramirez joked she had blocked out four hours for a discussion about her admission, but it turned out to be unnecessary.
