Why the mayor wore his pyjamas to work today

AEROPLANE print shorts and socks, a blue t-shirt and a white terry-cloth robe.

Those are the clothing items Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson wore to work yesterday - but it was for a good cause.

Cr Williamson ditched his usual business attire for pyjamas in support of the Pyjama Foundation ahead of National Pyjama Day on July 19.

For 15 years, the organisation has been pairing community volunteers with children in foster care to try and inspire a love of learning.

National Pyjama Day is the Foundation's biggest fund-raising event of the year, with more than $250,000 raised to support the program.

The Pyjama Foundation Founder and CEO Bronwyn Sheehan said the organisation expected this year was going to be biggest yet for the fundraiser.

"With statistics showing more than 90 per cent of children care will fall below the average reading level by age 7, this service has never been more important,” she said.

The Pyjama Foundation recruits, screens and trains volunteer mentors, and then carefully matches them with a child in care. Together, they focus on learning-based activities and games, with the aim of improving the child's educational outcomes and confidence.
