Why Cahill is our best Socceroo: 'He inspired us to dream'

IF THERE is one thing that should be at the top of new Socceroos coach Bert van Marwijk's list - it's making sure Tim Cahill is in the World Cup squad.

At 38 years of age he has wound back the clock and found form that has kept players 10 years his junior out of the starting XI.

Here is why he is the greatest player to ever wear the gold jersey.

For the best part of 15 years, Tim Cahill has been my hero.

While school friends, family members and football fanatics around me lauded the likes of Ronaldo, Messi and Rooney - Tim was always my number one.

Even when he moved to Everton.

As a Millwall fan, we don't win much, but watching Tim in his heyday inspired a young boy in south London to dream.

He inspired the young boy to dream that supporting a club in the second tier of English football wasn't all doom and gloom.

He inspired the young boy to dream that said club could defy the odds and win the FA Cup (and they nearly did). But most importantly, he inspired this young boy to lace up his boots.

In many ways, he kept this young boy from getting into trouble in his youth by occupying him with the greatest game on earth.

Fourteen years after he left, that same boy fought back tears as he "came home".

Cahill inspired kids from Australia to England to dream.

That is why he is the greatest Socceroo of all time.

So Tim, from a tragic Millwall supporter who has seen his fair share of lows, welcome home.

To Bert van Marwijk, do the right thing.
