Whitlam to head abuse inquiry

THE son of former prime minister Gough Whitlam will head an independent inquiry into the alleged sexual abuse of children in the NSW Catholic Church.

Antony Whitlam, a retired Federal Court judge and politician, has been appointed by two head bishops to investigate the way the church handled allegations made against a NSW priest known as "Father F".

According the Herald, Father F, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of sexually interferring with five boys aged about 10 or 11 between 1982-84 at Moree.

In 2004, he told a court he had admitted sexually molesting the boys to three other priests.

He was defrocked a year after and now lives in Armidale.

The police investigation is ongoing.
