A MEASLES case confirmed at Sunshine Coast University Hospital brings the state's total for the year up to 18, four more than for the whole of last year.

The Coast patient acquired the highly infectious virus while travelling overseas.

It takes the Sunshine Coast region's measles tally for 2019 to three.

But public health physician Dr Roscoe Taylor said there's no need to be alarmed.

"All people who had contact with this patient have been contacted by the public health unit,” Dr Taylor said.

"People who have not been contacted by health authorities should not be concerned about their risk from this case.”

A Sunshine Coast University Hospital spokeswoman couldn't say where the illness was contracted or when the patient presented at hospital but advised the patient had minimal public exposure.

Measles begins with symptoms such as fever, tiredness, cough, runny nose and red inflamed eyes, with symptoms usually growing more severe over three days.

The illness can cause serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).

It may also cause middle ear infection.

Measles is very contagious and can spread through coughing and sneezing.

Queensland Health recommends immunisation for people born during or since 1966, who had not received two documented doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine or had proven measles.

The vaccine is available free for all children aged 12 months and 18 months, and four-year-olds who have not previously received a second dose of measles, mumps, rubella.
