What Toowoomba residents claim most in their tax returns

WITH tax-time well under way, the Australian Taxation Office has revealed clothing and uniform costs are the most common work-related expenses claimed by Toowoomba residents.

New data from the ATO shows 31,297 residents claimed clothing and uniform expenses on their 2014 tax return, compared to 14, 448 car and 5292 travel claims.

A further 27, 208 claimed "other" expenses, which includes phone and internet costs, overtime meals and union fees.

ATO assistant commissioner Graham Whyte encouraged people to claim all work-related expense deductions to which they're entitled.

"If you're unsure about what you can and can't claim, start with the three golden rules," he said.

"Firstly, you have to have spent the money yourself and were not reimbursed. Secondly, the expense must be directly related to earning your income and, finally, you must have a record of the expense to prove it."

To keep track of your expenses, the ATO released a new addition to its smart phone app called myDeductions.

Taxpayers can use the tool throughout the year to track all work-related expenses and, come tax time, that information can be uploaded to pre-fill their tax return.

Mr Whyte said: "We recognise that keeping track of your receipts throughout the year can be a tedious and tricky task, but with myDeductions you can snap, save and store all your expenses and receipts to easily keep a record."

myDeductions can also be used to keep track of other deductions likes gifts and donations. The app is free to download for Apple, Android or Windows devices.
