What it means to be a tourist town

WHO doesn't love to travel, packing up life into a suitcase, forgetting about day to day reasonabilities, even if it's just for a weekend away (let someone else make the bed for a couple of days!)

Whether or not you realise it, Coffs Harbour is a hot tourist destination.

After recently being touted as one of the Top 10 Places to visit in 2018 by Australia.com and with so much on offer, it's not hard to see why people love visiting our beautiful region.

We are lucky enough to have facilities to hold world class sporting events, natural wonders and a thriving food scene.

Now, you may be thinking to yourself that your business has nothing to do with tourism and all that you notice, it is means your left waiting longer than usual to get a table at your favourite restaurant. However, tourism effects everyone, regardless of what business you're in.

Tourism allows a stream of cash flow that wouldn't otherwise be there. It keeps many people employed and those businesses that are directly involved in tourism, thriving.

This increase in spending boosts many local's income. The tourist dollar comes into our community in two waves, first through the business they directly chose to spend their money with - think cafes, restaurants, grocery stores, clothing, beauty, attractions and events. The second wave comes via the locals, the increase of their income flows back into the community and into non-tourist related business - dentists, accountants, lawyers, banks and all of those other day-to-day expenses we all have.

This extra income stream into our economy also allows us the ability to diversify. We are a region with many strong economic sectors outside of tourism. This diversity adds strength to our region and adds a cushion against hard times. It also allows our community the freedom to create some fantastic new infrastructure such as the new section at the Jetty Foreshores. These beautification changes show that we take pride in our town and our history.

So how do we keep tourists coming back and make their time here enjoyable? Get to know what's happening, there is always an event on! In business, learn to cross promote and don't be shy about letting people know which are your favourite restaurants or day trips. Continue with fantastic customer service, happy smiling staff are what people want to see.

When everyone is speaking about our region with passion, communicating about all of our wonderful attractions our value amplifies. Our reach becomes wider and our profile increases. The better Coffs Harbour does as a region, the better it is for our entire community.
