What do your plates say about you?
THE motorist cruising Ipswich streets with MONEYM8 on their personalised plates is not the only one pouring their dollars into their vehicles.
Ipswich ranked in Queensland's top 10 spots for personalised plate lay-bys during the 2013/2014 financial year, with 4222 ordered.
Another plate order was for the combination ICLOSE.
The Gold Coast was the top ranking location, making up more than 12% of sales.
The popularity of personalised plates did not surprise Ipswich Veteran and Vintage Vehicle Club member Clayton Wilson, who also has one himself.
In keeping with the theme of his Volvo 242 VGT, Mr Wilson's plate is 242VGT.
"Ipswich has always had a strong car culture, every time you come here some of the cars you see in Ipswich are quite impressive," he said.
"People like the individualism you have with personalised plates.
"You get the opportunity to make your car more individual and add your personality."
There are almost 700,000 personalised plates on vehicles cruising Queensland roads, and more than 71,000 Queenslanders ordered them from Personalised Plates Queensland in the past financial year.
The top selling plate state-wide was the design with a colour background or coloured numbers, or both, but the new Iconic Queensland and 3D plates also proved popular.
Mr Wilson believes the variety of designs available has been the key to personalised plates' success.
While admitting he found it easy to "throw a lot of money" while restoring his car over the past three years, Mr Wilson maintained the figure he had told his wife, saying he spent $17,000.
PPQ has had to pull out the stop sign for some all-too imaginative motorists, with 14% of plate searches on ppq.com.au between April and September considered inappropriate.
The plate combinations were knocked back for being either obscene, promoting unsafe behaviour, or offensive to a religion, culture, nation, race, or a minority group.
Less than 1% of plates sold were cancelled for being unacceptable.
PPQ chose not to offer any examples of inappropriate plates.
- Once a personalised plate is purchased in Queensland, it is the customer's for life.
- A personalised plate can be redesigned, but for a fee. That pink lily plate from your 18th probably looks like a little out of place in the 4WD now.
- With SAN74 CLAUS coming to town, personalised plates could be the perfect PRE551 to wrap up your Christmas shopping, whether you have been NAUGHTY or NIC3.
