‘We’ve let ourselves down,’ says Cheika

RUGBY: Wallabies coach Michael Cheika says he still has faith his team is heading in the right direction despite losing the first two Tests of the series against England.

Eddie Jones’ men have completed a remarkable turnaround since losing to the Wallabies in last year’s Rugby World Cup to be eliminated before the knockout stages.

A first series win Down Under has come just seven months into the former Australian coach’s reign, with some suggesting Cheika’s honeymoon period was now over ahead of Saturday’s final Test in Sydney.

The Wallabies mentor said he never thought he had one anyway and said he had more confidence in his team now than he ever did.

“The position we’re in today is that we have the team, we have the game to be where we want to be and we’ve let ourselves down the last couple of weeks with what we’ve put on the field,” he said.

“We know what we have to do and we’re going to do that.

“It’s completely on us. The thing about losing is it puts a microscope on yourself, pretty big, so you learn a lot from a loss as opposed to a win.

“We’re working very hard on ourselves and making sure that we put ourselves in the right positions.”

Meanwhile, England No.8 Billy Vunipola said he also knew that the England team was better than it showed in that World Cup disaster and always knew it would bounce back.

“We always felt like we were better than what we were putting out on the pitch,” he said.

“Things just needed to happen or we just needed to change something or something happens so that we realise we need to be better and I feel like we are.”
