WELL-CHOSEN words have long been known to be the happy companion of good food, so what could be more appropriate than the Coffs Coast Advocate inviting you to the Bellingen Readers and Writers Festival literary lunch with Robert Drewe.

With the festival in its inaugural year, the Advocate is proud to be hosting this delicious event, a feast for brain and body, on Saturday April 9.

Hear acclaimed West Australian author Robert Drewe (The Sark Net, The Bodysurfers, The Rip) speak on writing, reading and the art of the Australian story.

The lunch will be held at Bellingen’s Old Butter Factory at noon with a two-course meal including wine with each course.

Tickets are $60 and can be booked through the festival website at

This week the festival has also announced its full program of special events, inspired by and taking advantage of the region’s natural beauty.

“Diversity and accessibility were our aim,” said festival artistic director John Bennett.

“From paddling with poets on the Bellinger River to strolling through ancient rainforest of Dorrigo National Park or discussing Gumbaynggirr spirituality and sharing stories in a stone circle, the special events program is varied, interesting and fun.

“It has been designed to entice and excite everyone.”

Coffs Harbour events include an evening with festival poets Brook Emery and MTC Cronin on Wednesday April 6 and readings with Chris Womersley and Jon Bauer on April 7.

In Dorrigo, take a morning stroll through the rainforest and discover the ‘slow art of bushwalking’ followed by breakfast on April 8 and then stay on the plateau for Writing the Environment with Mary White.

‘Talking Stones – Sharing Stories’ is an afternoon with Auntie Bea Ballangarry and others at the unique stone circle, North Farm.

The list goes on with three days of events, readings, panels, forums and feasts.

There are workshops, schools programs, presentations and theatre performances. Check out the festival website for tickets and the full program:
