Why Murdock must win in US

THE weight of a world title dream is on Rohan Murdock's shoulders this weekend.

The Gold Coast boxer's campaign to be fighting for world champion status later this year begins on Sunday in Texas in the US.

There he will take on Frankie Filippone on the undercard to current super middleweight world champion Gilberto Ramirez's title defence against Habib Ahmed.

"This is absolutely the first step on his way to a world title fight," promoter Dean Lonergan said of Murdock, who has won 21 of his 22 fights.

His grand plan, though, hinges on the result of his bout with Filippone.

"The importance of Rohan winning is through the roof because if he doesn't win, it just sets everything back and basically he would blow his chance at a world title," Lonergan said.

"It's as simple as that. Winning is everything.

"And it's like everything in sport, if you want to grow a good following, if you want to make sure that people turn out, you have got to win.

"So if he loses, the dream is over in the short-term for Rohan Murdock. It would put him back at least 18 months to two years."

Should he follow the script with a win on Sunday, Murdock is likely to again line up on Ramirez's undercard in Mexico with a view to a "special and spectacular" title fight on the Gold Coast in late 2018.

"Filippone has been specially selected because he is a southpaw like Gilberto Ramirez," Lonergan said.

"We need to get Rohan in a position where not only can he compete for the world title but he can win it."

Murdock won the vacant WBO Oriental super-middleweight title over rugged Russian Apti Ustarkhanov last month.
