Weeds invade The Jetty Foreshores

THE Jetty Foreshores is in the grip of a weeds invasion and it will take a mammoth effort to get rid of them.

Jetty Dunecare needs volunteers from the community to help them restore the dunes to their former glory, even if you can spare only an hour or two.

Dunecare president Jane Ireland said the recent rain and hot weather had provided perfect conditions for the weeds to take hold.

“We are looking for as many hands on deck as possible. We’ll target a few easily-recognisable weed species and we will be working from south of Coffs Creek to the southern end of Jetty Beach,” Mrs Ireland said.

“One weed to be targeted is fleabain. It’s a tall weed that grows on a central stem and it has masses of miniature flowers and seeds up the top that blow in the wind.

“We want them pulled out before they flower or at least before they seed.”

Mrs Ireland said Jetty Dunecare’s work over the years had made the picnic area an enjoyable place.

“We maintain all the vegetation down there and we are getting more and more people picnicking down there,” she said.

Jetty Dunecare has been operating since 1982 and Mrs Ireland says as volunteers had removed weeds, most of the native vegetation had re-generated itself.
