FIFTY years after it was first introduced to the market, the iconic Fiat 124 Spider is making a fresh burst and, like its predecessor, will no doubt find a legion of supporters.
The new Fiat 124 Spider delivers driving excitement, technology and safety combined with iconic Italian design.
"It's a hugely exciting time for the Fiat brand both in Australia and globally, with some incredible vehicles joining the line-up," said FCA Australia president and CEO, Pat Dougherty.
"As we prepare to launch the Fiat 500X in Australia, our Italian colleagues have revealed the next evolution of one of motoring's most storied nameplates, the Fiat 124 Spider. When Italian design is applied to a two-seat sports car, the result was always going to be special, and the new Fiat 124 Spider doesn't disappoint.
"And the most exciting part is that this is only the beginning of the Fiat 124 Spider story."
Designed at Centro Stile in Turin, Italy, the new car borrows cues from the original Spider - widely considered one of Fiat's most beautiful cars of all time - and reinterprets them for today.
It has a timeless low-slung presence, with a classically beautiful bodyside, well-balanced proportions and a sporty cabin-to-hood ratio. Features like the hexagonal upper grille and grille pattern, "power domes" on the front hood and sharp horizontal rear lamps call to mind details of the historic Spider.
While there is no news yet on when the 124 Spider will come to Australia, the cars being offered to the US market are powered by a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo engine that delivers 119kW and 250Nm and is paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
The roadster is also packed with a full complement of on-trend inclusions and safety features.
