We don't rely on one player: Lowry
SEVEN Gladstone cricketers will play vital roles in Saturday's first round of the North Queensland Championships in Rockhampton against the Mackay Whitsunday zone.
The Glen gun all-rounder Sam Lowry, Trent Sorohan from the Yaralla Cricket Club, and Chad Gilmour (The Glen) will represent Central Queensland.
Josh Andrew will captain the CQ under-17 side which will also have fellow Yaralla player Nathan Spencer.
Matthew Lait (The Glen) and Nathan Cobb join Josh and Nathan as the other players from Gladstone in the youth side.
Lowry, fresh from a match-winning unbeaten 104 against Capricorn Coast Parkana in the Capricorn Challenge, says Central Queensland's strength will be that it has no reliance on any one player.
"I think we should go well because everyone bats and bowls”, Lowry said.
"We always have other options.”
CQ finished with a win and a loss last year with the third game being a washout.
Lowry said the side has five bowlers who are frontline.
"The first five bowlers in the team all start off with the new ball with their clubs,” Lowry added.
All teams will play two 50-over games and the second and last round will be held in Mackay on October 29 and 30 against North Queensland and Cricket Far North.
There will be plenty of incentives for the players to perform because those who do will get selected to represent North Queensland
All-rounder Terry Sawyer won't play, but is expected to come into the side for the showdown in Mackay while David Heymer is out of the championships with a finger injury.
