How to pick the perfect coffee table

THE coffee table can be the centre of your living space - the heart of the contemporary home. A coffee table also does a lot, from housing a stack of magazines to an ever-increasing array of remote controls.

The coffee table is also the place you sit any food and drink.

Based on the utility of this piece of furniture, you will want to choose a table that provides the ultimate solution for your needs - and one that works well with the style of your living space.

First up, before hitting the stores you will want to work out what size table would suit your space.

The average rectangle coffee table size is 120 by 60 centimetres; a large coffee table can be double that size, so you need to factor that when considering your furniture arrangement.

Another important factor to consider is height. Coffee tables should be the same height or less than the surrounding seating, with the average height of a table being about 45 centimetres.

This way you can put your drink down, rather than up.

Available in the mix of coffee tables are those with a lip edge.

These are great if you have a tendency to spill your drinks or have children who will be using the coffee table for snacks and drinks, pets in the family mix, or if you will be using the table when entertaining.

For style, there's a huge range of circular coffee tables that are increasingly popular.

If you don't want the coffee table to be the focus of the room, or you want to keep the room looking and feeling spacious, choose one with a glass top. And if you want the room to feel cosier, choose a solid table, or one with storage options underneath.
