WATCH: Horse trainer confident for Cox Plate Day
HORSE RACING: For Gladstone trainer Lee Kiernan is confident his mare French Flame can get the job done in Saturdays Cox Plate Day at Ferguson Park.
The six-year-old has shown strong form in recent Rockhampton races and Kiernan is bullish that this momentum will continue.
"Cox Plate, big day and is one of the biggest days for our club," he said.
"French Flame likes the Gladstone track and she loves racing here.
"At the present moment she is fit and healthy and started in Bundaberg a few weeks ago where she ran second."
French Flame, which was purchased from Melbourne a year ago, has adapted to the different conditions here Kiernan said she should start as one of the favourites on her home track.
"She's had four starts here for three wins and a second on the track so I'm expecting her to run pretty good and fingers crossed nothing will go wrong with her between now and Saturday," Kiernan said.
The experienced trainer has been involved at Ferguson Park for more than three decades.
Kiernan's other horse is Varnamo, but he admits the seven-year-old bay gelding will struggle to get up for Saturday's big day.
"At this stage he may not get there because I'm having trouble getting a shoe on one back foot, so at this stage I think he's has got a back problem, probably a Sacroiliac," he said.
