Warwick Water Rats women go down fighting in grand final

RUGBY UNION: UPDATE 4.00pm: The Warwick Water Rats women's sevens team has gone down 20-7 to the Bears in the inaugural grand final in Toowoomba this afternoon.

Warwick trailed 10-0 at half-time.

Bears scored two tries in the corner near the main bar at Clive Berghofer Stadium in the second half before Jayde Ware scored for Warwick.

Her try was converted by Tshinta Kendall but Warwick didn't get the chance to make up the difference as in a 10-minute half time quickly runs out.

EARLIER: RUGBY UNION: The Warwick Water Rats women have qualified for this afternoon's grand final in Darling Downs sevens rugby.

In a format rarely played in Downs sports finals, the qualifying final was played on grand final day at Clive Berghofer Stadium in Toowoomba with the winner to play Bears in the grand final as a forerunner of the Dalby/Goondiwindi men's A-grade grand final.

The Warwick women beat Dalby 17-12 in the qualifying final this afternoon at Clive Berghofer Stadium after the score was 7-7 at half time.

The 2017 season is the first for women's sevens rugby on the Darling Downs and follows the Australian team win at the Rio Olympics with a team including a strong Darling Downs presence.

Warwick won the inaugural Downs minor premiership in what was a personal coaching triumph for Lauren Fowler.

The grand final is scheduled to start at 2.45pm Saturday. It will be played over two 10-minute halves, regular games are two seven-minute halves.

This is the first women's competition so if Warwick win they will be the first winners in history.
