MICHELLE Legett's method for picking winners is not logical but it works.
Michelle, of Kings Beach, bet on every race in Brisbane, Sydney and the Sunshine Coast today and managed to pull a win or place in all bar one, including the Cup.
"Anything with Dancer in the name, or black, or something funny," she said.
Michelle's brother, Doug Messinbird, went with the traditional method - the firm guide - but got nowhere near her results.
He did not knock his sister's technique.
EARLIER: ABOUT 140 stylish racegoers have entered Fashions on the Field at Corbould Park.
The number of entrants has exceed expectations, sending organisers scurrying for more entry forms.
Among the entrants are Bianca Clark, 29, and her partner Aiden Matthews, 28, of Kawana.
Bianca is wearing dress of Mexican and bullfighter inspiration she made herself.
Aiden is wearing a chequered suit bought online with leopard spot shoes "because they're awesome" with a cane "because every man should have a cane". His hat, tie, and metal collar tips and chain bought for next-to-nothing from an op shop.
Fashions on the Field will be judged from 12.30pm.
Among those making a day of it at Corbould Park for the Melbourne Cup today are Beerwah friends Kiera Tipper and Melissa Adamson.
Kiera ventured to Ladies Oaks Day earlier this year and had such a good time that she talked her old schoolmate, Melissa, who has never been to the races before, into joining her at the track for the Melbourne Cup.
Melissa spent a day unsuccessfully trying to find a dress to wear before a friend came to the rescue with the loan of one and a hat.
Kiera has made use of the dress she bought for her sister's 21st a few months ago, and borrowed a fascination from a friend.
"The only thing we've had to worry about is shoes," she said.
The 18-year-olds are planning to meet up with friends.
"We'll have a few drinks with them and bet on some horses," Kiera said.
Kiera, a nursing student, has promised an elderly resident of the nursing home where she has been doing her placement that she will bet on number 10 for her.
"I just said pick a number between 1 and 20," she said.
