Walking her way to a healthier heart

DEL Greenslade is one of the thousands of Australians who know the importance of looking after hearth health.

The Alexandra Headland resident is a member of the Alex Head Heart Foundation walking group who meets once a week for a group walk.

More than 80,000 Australians have participated in Heart Foundation walking groups in the past 21 years and Ms Greenslade said they were a great way to be social and active.

"The walking is great but I think most of us enjoy it because it's a social outing as well,” she said.

She also recently started the Prime Minister's One Million Step Campaign, which challenges Australians to walk one million steps by August 11 to promote an active lifestyle and better health.

Heart Foundation research shows more than half of Australian adults are not doing enough physical activity which increases the risk of heart issues.

Mrs Greenslade said she hoped Australian's embraced a healthier lifestyle beyond the campaign.

"We need to keep being healthy beyond August. It's so vital everyone adds in just a bit of exercise everyday,” she said.

Heart Foundation Queensland healthy living manager Sheree Hughes said walking for 30 minutes a day is a great way to improve heart health.

"We don't always validate walking as a strong form of physical activity but it is and it's something we can do at any time of the day,” she said.

While one million steps kicked off last week, Ms Hughes said people can join at any time.

"It doesn't matter if you don't achieve the million it's about working towards a more active future,” she said.
