Voters are turning off both sides of government

VOTERS continue to turn off both the Abbott Government and Labor opposition, with a poll showing a fall in major party popularity, despite Labor retaining its lead.

The News Ltd Newspoll released on Tuesday shows Labor sits at 53% against the Coalition's 47% in the two-party preferred stakes post-budget.

Despite Labor's post-budget surge, there is just 1% between the two major parties in primary voter support, with the government on 37% and Labor on 36%.

But support has continued to rise for independents and crossbench MPs, with minor parties and independents scoring a record 17% across the spectrum.
