Aussie blokes land on volleyball's world stage
AUSTRALIA'S men's team has emerged as a contender on the global stage, earning a place in this week's 2014 FIVB World League finals in Italy after a stunning run in the final qualifying tournament in Sydney on the weekend.
Perhaps garnering the team more attention though was a image taken of the boys in their change room and posted on the team's Facebook page that was about to top 1300 'likes'.
After upsetting the Netherlands 3-0 in the opening match, the Volleyroos backed that up by edging out France in five tough sets, 25-20 22-25 25-22 23-25 16-14.
Captain Andre Zingel described the achievement as equal to qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics.
"We've become a whole different team, and it's phenomenal. I'm so happy to be part of it," he said.
Australia will join Italy, Brazil, Iran, Russia and the US in the World League finals which start in Florence on Wednesday.
Of the finalists, Brazil is the No.1 ranked team in men's volleyball, followed by Russia (2nd), Italy (3rd) and the US (4th).
Iran comes in at No.12 and Australia at 14.
