THIS weekend and next will be your last chance to visit the Nangara Eco House at Toormina.

The six-month display period for the house ends on the last weekend in February.

Nangara has a passive solar design, photovoltaic solar cells, bamboo flooring, expanded polystyrene cladding, a grey-water system, rainwater tanks, an integrated handbasin and toilet using rainwater, solar hot water system and energy-efficient lighting.

“It has been an enjoyable six months showing people the benefits of sustainable housing,” said Ben Luffman, the developer of the house.

He said more than 1000 people had visited the house and had been impressed by its design, comfort and money saving features.

During the six-month display period Ben has been living in the house to demonstrate that it actually is more comfortable to live in and it does save energy, water and money.

Ben said he now had a $130 credit with Country Energy and had paid hardly anything for water.

In winter, the temperature in the house did not drop below 16.9°C and even on the hottest days of summer, the top temperature in the house was below 30°C.

Ben now hopes the visitors to the house will incorporate at least some of the features in their own homes so their environmental impact is reduced and their health and comfort is improved.

He said the financial and comfort benefits alone made an eco house worth considering.

The Nangara Eco House, at 14 Noomba Street, Toormina, will be open between 10am and 3pm Saturday and Sunday until the end of February or check out the website at www.nangara.com.au.
