VIDEO: Indian college girls fight off attackers on bus

TWO young Indian women have inspired the world after being filmed ferociously fighting off three male harassers as they travelled to college.

Indian website The Logical Indian reports the sisters were confronted by the men who attempted to "eve tease" the girls.

The term "eve tease" is slang for public sexual harassment.

The website describes the act as a "rare show of courage", who defended themselves after one of the men reportedly began physically assaulting them after his advances were spurned.

In the footage, one of the girls began can be seen striking her apparent attacker with a belt.

Others on the bus appear to sit quietly, avoiding a confrontation with the men.

The father of the two girls said there had been pressure from the local government, or "panchayat" to withdraw their claims.

Police superintendant Shashank Anand said the accused men had been identified and would soon be arrested.

"These are the brave girls of the country and we fully support them," he said.

The video has now gone viral, with the sisters from the city of Rohtak even inspiring a hashtag: #RohtakBravehearts
