A TOP-of-the-line Australian sports car has been destroyed by a Toyota Prius at a Queensland intersection, with the driver of the Japanese electric car appearing to drive straight through a red light.

Captured by a dashboard camera in the HSV GTS -- a V8 sedan -- the driver begins to cross the major junction in the northern suburb of Carseldine, when the Prius comes past and takes out its front end.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

Known only as Chris, the HSV driver wrote on YouTube that he waited a few seconds after the light went green -- a trick he learned while riding motorcycles.

"Light has gone green, off I go and out of no where this white car just goes straight in to me and ends up in oncoming traffic.

"Both my airbags go off. I get a knock to the head and hand.

"The story from the other driver is he was changing lanes and wasn't looking, didn't have time to stop for the red light and went straight through it and in to me."

According to Chris, the other driver may face police charges.
