It was supposed to be a tender moment between Art Green and the woman who would soon be crowned the winner of The Bachelor NZ.

Instead, a koala called Happy Jay with troubled bowels stole the limelight during a date between Bachelor Green and winning Bachelorette Matilda Rice.

The pair were on a date at a wildlife sanctuary on Australia's Gold Coast during last night's finale when the incident occurred.

MORE KOALAS?

Rice, who went on to beat Dani Robinson in the show's finale, confessed her feelings for Green while holding the koala, telling him: "I know that you're the one I want to be with."

The pair tried to ignore the flatulent koala's farts, but couldn't when it started pooing on Rice.

At first, the pair tried to ignore the koala, but burst into awkward giggles when the incident occurred.

Green seemed impressed with Rice's reaction, saying: "Matilda is so cool about this. A koala bear's just pooed into her belly button, and she's just rolled with it."

On Twitter, some fans called it the highlight of the series - while others said it was the lowlight.

It's reminiscent of an earlier incident on The Bachelor NZ, when contestant Poppy farted twice during a beach date with Green.

That incident made worldwide headlines.
