Victory locks in pre-season camp
COFFS Harbour is cementing its reputation as the regional training ground for elite athletes following the arrival of another major club to our region.
Melbourne Victory's pre-season campaign will ramp up this week with a six-day camp at Novotel Pacific Bay Resort's Elite Training Centre.
Escaping the Melbourne winter, the squad's arrival is the third major club to train at the facility this year following outings by the NSW Blues and the Western Sydney Wanderers.
Negotiations had commenced with Victory in February, with representatives arriving in Coffs Harbour last month to inspect the facilities.
Novotel Pacific Bay Resort executive assistant manager Jodie Evans said securing the team was another boost for the region.
"A-league teams had been targeted since the Wanderers came to Coffs Harbour in January and the feedback from the clubs we've hosted has been very positive," she said.
"It's a competitive process - we compete with international destinations and there are a lot of elements involved in meeting requirements for a camp.
"The Wanderers put us on the map and it's certainly been a great year for elite sport in the region."
While in town, Victory will also hold a development and coaching clinic for emerging talent and their coaches.
Melbourne Victory head coach Kevin Muscat said he was excited to bring the team to Coffs Harbour for the first time.
"This trip provides a fantastic opportunity for the players to spend some quality time together and to focus on our goals and objectives for the season," Muscat said.
"We will certainly use our time effectively. I'm extremely confident the trip will prepare us well for our FFA Cup campaign and the Hyundai A-League season."
Victory will jet north to the Gold Coast next week ahead of their first pre-season game against Brisbane Roar on August 20.
