Venom leads the way in river title
THE 2013 Head of the River race from the Bundaberg Sailing Club to the town reach and back resulted in an incident-free race.
In previous years skippers have managed to find submerged rock walls and navigation pylons with alarming regularity.
Bruce Potter and Matthew Caldwell (Venom) were too strong for their rivals and led from start to finish.
Jarrod Potter (On the Square) tried hard but could not match the bigger boat on the longer reaches.
Junior sailor Trent Potter (Jackpot) sailed a magnificent race to complete the course and only miss third place by a few minutes.
George Richardson and Bernie Tobin (Kinda Busy) finished third over the line.
The Venomous duo took the handicap title from Potter with another Potter - Trent - taking a well-earned third place.
The trailer sailers rescheduled championship race precluded them from starting in the Head of the River race.
David Vockler's Grainger trimaran (Silent Running) scored an impressive line
honours victory with Wicked (Derek Foley) and Slippery Deck (Rod Daley) maintaining their usual rivalry,
Wicked was successful this time in second with the Deckers only a minute or so back.
The handicap placings were identical, with only a few minutes separating the first four boats.
The last race for 2013 will be held this weekend with the Bargara Bash set down for a 10am start.
The boats will start in the river then race down to a turning mark just off the clock at Bargara and return to the finish line at the club. The Club Christmas party will follow. Some racers will attend the National Titles before Club racing resumes in late January.
