CRICKET: Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has backed Joe Root as the right man to lead England after the Yorkshireman was chosen to replace Alastair Cook as captain of his country.

Root, 26, was handed the role despite having only skippered Yorkshire in three first-class matches.

Vaughan said there was no problem with Root's inexperience as captain, having stood as Cook's deputy for the past year or so.

"People who say he's not quite ready are talking nonsense. He's driven and got the right attitude," Vaughan told the BBC.

"He's ready-made for the England captaincy."

Root, who has played 53 Tests, will assume the new role officially in the first Test against South Africa in July.

Former Yorkshire and England captain Geoffrey Boycott said fans would want Root "to take a risk now and again".

"Everything that has ever been thrown at Joe, every time he's moved upwards in his career, he's handled it," Boycott said on BBC radio.

"If not straight away, then he's quickly got to it because he's got an acute cricket brain."

All-rounder Ben Stokes has been named as Roots' vice-captain.
