Vandals deface golf course with large graffiti drawings

WHEN Grafton District Golf Club greenkeeper Dean Niland got to work at 6am he immediately saw something was wrong

Mr Niland said the barbed wire fence surrounding the maintenance shed was cut and soon saw the spray paint was missing.

"There was paint on the mower and around the shed," Mr Niland said.

"We went from there hoping for the best."

But there was a trail of drawings leading to the course and when Mr Niland and his colleagues got there they found obscene language and images sprayed into the grass with the stolen paint.

Large graffiti drawings spread right across the course, meaning the vandals were determined to walk around and do the damage.

The second fairway and fourth green were hit the worst.

"They did about $1000 in damage, maybe more," Mr Niland said.

"We will have to clean the paint off the buildings and signs with turps.

"But you can't scrub it out of the grass. We will have to wait a month before it grows out."

Mr Niland said because the vandals sprayed close to the roots of the grass, they might have damaged the green.

"They poured oil on one patch which killed all the grass. It could be months before it grows back because nothing will want to grow there," he said.

"I may have to dig it up and put new soil there."

One golfer said it was disappointing to see the graffiti.

"You would think they could find something better to do," he said.

Mr Niland said the golf club reported the damage to the police.

The Daily Examiner was unable to get comment from local police.
