Alzheimers van rolls into Coffs

COFFS Coast Alzheimer's sufferers and their carers should keep an eye on the road this month - the Memory Van is coming to town.

An initiative of Alzheimer's Australia NSW, the Memory Van sets up shop at retirement facilities, community centres, schools and shopping centres to raise awareness of dementia.

The van is fully equipped with help sheets, fact sheets, internet, DVD resources, Nintendo brain games and puzzles, and a trained educator also travels with the van.

The Memory Van will be at the Dorrigo Markets on February 7, Coffs Harbour on February 16 and 17 and in Macksville on February 26.

Alzheimer's Australia is also hosting a free course for family carers and friends of people with dementia in Coffs Harbour this month.

Course topics include the nature of dementia, effective communication and the impact of dementia on the person and their carer.

The free course will run over two days on February 16 and 23 at Cavanbah Centre on Harbour Drive.

For more information on the Memory Van, call the National Dementia Hotline on 1800 100 500. To register for the carers' course, call Judy Bartholomew on 6659 2082.
