Valla macadamia producers named the best of the year

VALLA macadamia growers Peter and Denise Ranking have risen to the "top of the crop" to be named small growers of the year by the industry's peak body.

The hard-earned honour comes from the Australian Macadamia Society's annual grower awards that recognise producers with high saleable and low reject kernel per hectare (SK/ha).

With more than 600 growers across Australia, competition for the award is always intense.

But Peter and Denise came up trumps after farming their second biggest crop this year.

Peter said effective nutrition and pest control programs attributed to the success.

"We had no idea we were going to win," he said.

"We put it down to controlling lace bug effectively, and staying committed to our nutrition program even when prices were low.

"Next year is looking pretty good too."

The couple posted a 2159kg SK/ha result to secure the top prize.

So impressive are the results, the AMS recently hosted a MacGroup grower workshop on their farm so other local growers could come along to see the secrets behind their success.

The large grower of the year award went to Upper Duroby's David and Sharon Wardrop.
