USC students plan night at the races for beer and food fest
UNIVERSITY of the Sunshine Coast students will team up with the Sunshine Coast Turf Club to launch the inaugural Uni Twilight Races on Friday, May 4, , raising funds for the Teens Take Control charity.
A team of six dedicated students will be hosting the Crafty Beer and Food Fest as part of the event from 3-9pm at Corbould Park racecourse, as part of a practical assessment for their degree.
Third-year student Isabelle Lewis believes few social events are available for university students on the Coast.
"This is an opportunity to get behind a good cause and for university students to have a night where we can socialise, watch races, enjoy a drink and have a good time with our friends,” she said.
"As a team, we came up with an event concept that incorporates everything that we would enjoy such as live entertainment, craft beer, local food, life-size games and prizes that appeal to an array of university students. We will be holding a raffle on the night for Teens Take Control which will be donated to help purchase a 12-seater bus for troubled teens to attend various programs and activities.”
Sunshine Coast Turf Club CEO John Miller is excited that this is the first event of its kind aiming to bring in a crowd of university students to the race track.
"It is certainly something we have been looking at doing for university students for a long time, and what better way to understand what university students want than for a team of students to actually host the event at our Friday night races,” he said.
The students are aiming to raise $3000 for Teens Take Control on the night. Teens Take Control helps Coast teenagers take control of their lives and navigate their way through issues such as bullying and mental health by undertaking TAFE courses and other activities to boost their confidence.
Admission for the event will be at a discounted price of $5 for students with ID, $10 for general admission and free for under-18s.
