A SEVERE weather and thunderstorm warning has been issued for tornadoes, destructive winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall.

This warning was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology at 5.45pm for the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Northern Tablelands and parts of the Hunter and North West Slopes and Plains Forecast Districts

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce tornadoes, destructive winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Armidale, Inverell, Tenterfield, Lismore and Grafton.

A downpour of 45mm of rainfall was recorded at Narrabri airport in the hour from 1.30pm to 2.30pm.

A tornado was reported near Ben Lomond (north of Guyra) at about 4.20pm.
